CASSADY ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
WCUCC supported Cassady Elementary last year with 20+ tutors and coaches, plus "behind the scenes" support of teachers and administration. Last year was our fourth year of service and we built on our relationships with this Columbus Public School, its administration and, most importantly, many of its students. We hope that in the 2009-10 school year we'll be able to offer even more volunteer support and have additional ways that WCUCC members can get involved.
Program Elements for school year 2009-10
TUTORING & MENTORING
Briefly, our one-on-one tutoring and mentoring will primarily work on reading, writing, and comprehension skills with first and second graders. Tutors will meet with their student one day per week for an hour beginning in October. We have two daily time slots that WCUCC volunteers can choose from: lunch hour (11:55 to 12:40), or after-school (4 pm).
Each tutor will choose a day of the school week to meet consistently with their student. Tutors will select the day and time that fits their schedule. Weekly adjustments can be made periodically, or substitute tutors will serve as needed.
Cassady teachers will provide our volunteers with student academic profiles, they will train our volunteers, and give us periodic feedback on our students' progress. We intend to begin the new school year with training (date to be determined).
AFTER-SCHOOL COACHING & ENRICHMENT
The Communities in Schools' after-school program at Cassady has run out of funding. We'll be meeting with school administration in the next two weeks to determine what opportunities we might be able to organize without the support of CIS. We'll update the congregation when we know more.
SEVERAL OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
Other opportunities to help at Cassady include volunteering to help with Cassady Family Nights (probably quarterly or every other month). Additionally, we would like to continue to have volunteers from WCUCC to work behind the scenes to support and encourage the teachers and staff at Cassady.
Recruiting is starting NOW!! We would like to give Mrs. Smoot some indication of the number of tutors/mentors we'll have by mid-September.
